Equine Claims
If you have a claim or suspect a possible claim, please follow the steps detailed below to make sure your insurance coverage is put into effect. Your prompt action in completing all the steps below is crucial to your claim being serviced in a timely and accurate manner.
What to do in an emergency involving a horse:
The first step is to make sure the immediate needs of your horse are met, which often includes contacting your veterinarian. Next, contact your insurance carrier or LEGIS as soon as possible. Please note that your insurance contract requires prompt notification of any injury or illness.
If your horse dies, you must have a necropsy (autopsy) performed to determine cause of death.
You may phone LEGIS on our direct line at 866-780-3713. If it is after business hours, choose the emergency option on our answering service. You will be directed to an after-hours emergency mailbox and a representative will respond in a timely manner. Please remember to leave your phone number so we can call you back.
OR
You can contact your specific insurance carrier or claims representative.
When calling either LEGIS or your specific carrier about a claim, please provide as much of the below information as possible:
- Policy number
- Name of the horse
- Nature of incident
- Name and phone number of treating veterinarian
- Date of incident
- Insured’s name and contact information
Once the claim is filed, the best way to receive prompt reimbursement for any covered loss is to give the claims adjuster a prompt response to all requests for specific items or further details. In addition, a quick response from the attending veterinarian including forms or documents needed by the claims adjuster is very helpful in expediting a claim.
Please find a list of carriers and claims adjusters. Please make sure to call the correct carrier or adjuster.

What should you do if there is an injury to a person on your property or during your event?
First, make sure all people and animals are safe. Second, providing it is safe to do so, take appropriate steps to reduce or mitigate any further damage from occurring.
In addition, notify authorities, such as the police, as appropriate. For example, if a theft has occurred you need a police report.
Finally, please notify LEGIS during business hours in as timely a fashion as possible. Please have relevant facts and information pertaining to the incident or accident available when you call us at : 866-780-3713.
A “claim” is when the insurance carrier is officially notified that a loss has occurred. An “incident” is generally when something has happened that may result in claim. Usually these are liability matters such as someone getting a minor injury caused by a horse or a trip and fall. The situation may or may not result in filing a claim with the insurance carrier. However, we always recommend that you notify us.
